We collected the
donations and discovered a few very old and interesting books amongst
them...</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvCdQODgEiRfNRWUPCVvn148roINqvXwi8FNYRrjrbQ6q8yFCUEGlwMNxmS5Brg-bri4A4QbmwyD29i7sZ7q5jmyRDPHqhgTbuRv3wHaiexBuFNDoA-AIaw8ZBHFx4qx-_cCFmSDWc9vk/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvCdQODgEiRfNRWUPCVvn148roINqvXwi8FNYRrjrbQ6q8yFCUEGlwMNxmS5Brg-bri4A4QbmwyD29i7sZ7q5jmyRDPHqhgTbuRv3wHaiexBuFNDoA-AIaw8ZBHFx4qx-_cCFmSDWc9vk/s320/photo.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We always check through donations to see if anything is particularly collectable or valuable and were thrilled to find some books that dated back to 1821. On checking the internet, the titles did not seem hugely collectable, however, we were intrigued to notice that some of the earlier books had the former owner’s name inscribed “Augusta Leigh, St. James’ Palace”. We realised there must be a royal connection so began a little online research.<br />
<br />
We learned that Augusta Leigh was the poet Lord Byron’s half-sister and that she was part of one of the most sensational scandals to hit Georgian England. She married Colonel George Leigh who as equerry to the Prince of Wales had cheated the Prince over the sale of a horse and fiddled his regimental expenses. He was subsequently dismissed and poor Augusta went on to endure a life of poverty. She later had an affair with her own half brother which was largely responsible for Byron’s separation from his wife before he departed British shores in 1816, never to return.<br />
<br />
Augusta had seven children and one of the donated books ‘Trimmer’s Fabulous Histories’ is inscribed by Augusta to “Henry Francis Leigh from his dear Mamma on his birthday, January 28th 1828”<br />
<br />
Henry Francis Leigh went on to marry Mary Maria Edgar with whom he had one daughter, Geraldine Amelia, born in 1845. Sadly, Henry died aged just 33, but Mary Maria remarried an Indian cotton merchant, James Landon in 1856 and had two more children, Letitia in 1857 and Herman in 1859.<br />
<br />
The then ‘Mrs Landon’ inscribed her own books which include a very early ‘Beeton’s All About Cookery’, together with her own recipe for fruit buns!<br />
<br />
We visited the donor and explained our findings. She had come by the books when she purchased a house where items of furniture including a large bookcase remained. She was delighted and gave us a further two tiny ‘Liliputian Library’ books which had been inscribed by all three of the children, dating back to1864.<br />
<br />
Herman went on to become a Major-General in the British Army and married Christian Sharp in 1903.<br />
<br />
It has been a thrilling exercise to learn so much about this family through their treasured books.<br />
<br />
We consulted an expert seller who advised that the Lilliputian Library books are rare in such good condition. We eventually intend to put the collection as a whole up for sale but have decided to display them for the time being in the bookshop for everyone to enjoy.<br />
<br />
We are always in need of books of every type – do please think of us if you are clearing any out – we would love to have them! <br />
<br />
<b>The Bookshop is open every day 11.00am to 3.00pm, whatever the weather, and our Book Club meets monthly, so please do pop in on your next visit! </b><br />

The Yorkshire Post were here at Harewood today to photogrpah a new rose named 'Yorkshire Princess' in honour of HRH Princess Mary. Our Craft Gardener Helen Fletcher is shown with the rose in the Yorkshire Post piece (right).<br />
<br />
We are introducing the new
rose called 'Yorkshire Princess', dedicated to HRH the Princess Mary,
Princess Royal, who lived here at Harewood for more than 30 years, to coincide with our <a href="http://www.harewood.org/whats-on/exhibitions/1/801" target="_blank">Royal Harewood</a>
exhibition in this Diamond Jubilee year, .<br />
<br />
Resembling an old-fashioned rose, this beautiful, but modest
groundcover or patio rose, has a slight sweet scent, and is white with a
delicate Orient Pink centre. Flowering throughout the summer, it is
suitable for planting in rockeries, at the front of borders or alongside
paths in cottage gardens, and will shortly be planted here at Harewood
to commemorate the Princess's contribution to the Gardens.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/HRH_Princess_Mary_on_the_Terrace_at_Harewood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Gardens - HRH Princess Mary on the Terrace" border="0" height="156" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/HRH_Princess_Mary_on_the_Terrace_at_Harewood.jpg" width="204" /></a>Trevor
Nicholson, Head Gardener at Harewood House, said: “Princess Mary was a
very keen gardener and plantswoman who made a significant impact on
the gardens here, introducing many elements of the gardens which our
visitors still enjoy today. She was particularly fond of roses and so,
to mark this year’s special ‘Royal Harewood’ exhibition, a rose was the
ideal way to create a lasting tribute. The pure white petal, soft blush
centre and sweet scent give a traditional feel, in-keeping with
old-style roses and perfect for a Yorkshire Princess.”<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Rosa_Yorkshire_Princess_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Gardens - Rosa Yorkshire Princess" border="0" height="152" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Rosa_Yorkshire_Princess_1.jpg" width="204" /></a>A limited number of <i>Rosa ‘Yorkshire Princess’</i>
will be available to purchase as a containerised shrub from the
Harewood plant stall this summer, with new stock arriving in November
2013. You can <a href="mailto:info@harewood.org" target="_blank">register your interest</a> by emailing us your contact details, and we'll send you an update when further stock becomes available.<br />
<br />
Bred in Northern Ireland by Dickson Nurseries, it is currently available to pre-order online as a root for potting from <a href="http://www.dickson-roses.co.uk/patio_roses.html" target="_blank">their website</a> for delivery in November 2012.<br />
<br />
We'll be officially launching our new rose at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show,
staged at the Great Yorkshire Showground from 14-16 September, you can
call the Ticket hotline on 01423 546157 or <a href="http://www.flowershow.org.uk/" target="_blank">visit their website</a> for more details of the show.<br />
<br />
Our exhibition, <a href="http://www.harewood.org/whats-on/exhibitions/1/801" target="_blank">Royal Harewood</a>, celebrating the life of the Princess continues until the end of September.<br />
<br />
Explore the gardens for yourself, from the breath-taking Terrace
overlooking majestic 'Capability' Brown landscape, to the exotic plant
hunters' paradise of the Himalayan Garden and the delightful lakeside
and woodland paths to the Walled Garden...<br />

Artists Simon Warner, Susan Collins, Eleanor Moreton and Diane Howse have created artistic responses to medieval Harewood;<img alt="Exhibitions - Medieval Harewood" height="306" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Margaret_Percy.jpg" style="float: right; margin: 5px;" width="204" />
performance tours, moving image, paintings and photography bring
stories alive to evoke Harewood's fascinating medieval past. In the
Terrace Gallery you can also learn more about the newly excavated
Gawthorpe Hall.<br />
<h3>
The Artists...</h3>
Diane Howse has responded to Medieval Harewood by photographing and
digitally reconstructing the alabaster tombs of Harewood Church. The
tombs would have originally been painted in full colour, and if you look
closely at the effigies in the church, traces of original pigment can
still be seen today. Diane has digitally recreated the colours that may
have been used and her photographs give us a visual impression of the
human beings that lived at Harewood.<br />

and Sibyl de Aldeburgh who became joint heiresses of Harewood Castle in
1388. Her paintings respond to the relationships and power structures
between families at Harewood in the medieval period as well as the
illuminated prayer books, the Books of Hours, people owned at that time.<br />

<div style="color: black;">
In the UK our wonderful tree heritage is recorded within the <a href="http://www.treeregister.org/">Tree Register</a>,
a Registered Charity with a unique database of over 150,000 of our
most notable Trees. </div>

Harewood's trees are a beautiful and important feature of the landscape which surrounds the House. Following our latest Tree Register Report we can now say we are home to several Champion Trees!</div>
<div style="color: black;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: black;">
We have a Grand
Fir growing in the Lakeside Gardens (SE of the Cascade beside the path towards the Walled Garden) which has been recorded as the tallest in
Yorkshire. It is the best the Tree Inspector has ever seen and looks as if it wants to grow a bit taller too!</div>
<div style="color: black;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: black;">
We also have a rare Japanese oak (planted by Her Majesty Queen Alexandra
on 8th July 1908) in the grounds; it is certainly a champion tree
for Yorkshire and maybe a Champion Tree for the whole of the British Isles, we'll wait for final confirmation and update the post here!</div>
<div style="color: black;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: black;">
Several other trees become County Champions for Yorkshire including: </div>
<ul style="color: black;">
<li>Grecian Fir in the West Garden</li>
<li>Purple Bean Tree south of the Cascade, by the Stupa </li>
<li>Katsura Tree in the Himalayan Garden</li>
<li>Leylandii south of the Lake, near the large Sessile Oak</li>
<li>Eucryphia in the Archery Border which is remarkably large for Yorkshire! </li>
<li>Japanese Big-leaved Magnolia in the Himalayan Garden</li>
<li>London Plane in the Bird Garden </li>
<li>Japanese Cherry beside the path to the Church</li>
<li>Scarlet Oak on the North Front opposite the House</li>
<li>Daimyo Oak on the North Front opposite the House</li>
</ul>

which arc across Central Asia, has an extraordinary diversity of flora.<br />
<br />
<b>Alan Titchmarsh, who opened the garden in May 2009, said “The
Harewood Himalayan Garden is a hidden gem and second to none in the UK.
Tell your friends!” </b><br />
<br />
Harewood’s Himalayan Garden, a redevelopment of the ‘Rock Garden’
nurtured by Princess Mary and her husband the 6th Earl of Harewood in
the 1930s, is this extraordinary world in miniature, a plant-hunter’s
paradise.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Gardens - Himalayan Garden Bridge" height="138" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Himalayan_Garden_bridge_IMG_6259__credit_Trevor_Nicholson.jpg" style="float: right;" width="207" />With
paths through a gorge and a bridge across the beck, this is somewhere
for all garden-lovers to visit, with primulas, orchids, cobra lilies,
blue poppies and more than 50 kinds of rhododendron.<br />
<br />
It is also home to the Harewood Stupa, a Buddhist monument built in
2004 by monks from the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. The Stupa is the
only one of its kind in the UK.<br />
<br />
Some rare and beautiful flowers you might be lucky enough to see in this exotic Garden if you visit in June... <br />

coming into flower in the Archery Border. You most likely won't have seen these palms anywhere else, nor would you necessarily associate palm trees coming into flower in Yorkshire! It is high yielding given a long season.<span style="color: #1f497d;"> </span></div>

by Jeremy Shirley's father in the late 1940's - the Dad's Army Days!<br />
Home Guard is a superior potato of excellent flavour that does not go
floury like some varieties. Both the skin and flesh is pure white. High yielding and with good resistance to scab, this explains why
this popular wartime variety found huge commercial success - and has
continued to remain one of the gardener's favourites since WWII.<br />

Soup. Introduced in 1831, this ever popular variety was once one of the
main ingredients of said soup.<br />

response to the global crisis in bee populations bumblebee ‘lodges’ are
being installed in amongst the vegetable and fruit beds and orchard in
the Walled Garden at Harewood for the second year.</span><br />
<br />
<div id="mainContent">
<div style="font-family: inherit;">
Head Gardener Trevor explains it’s all part of Harewood’s
conservation and sustainability strategy, “We use bumblebees to help
with pollination in the orchard and vegetable garden. Bumblebees carry
more pollen, visit more flowers and work at lower temperatures than the
average honey bee and we’re keen to support British bumblebee
populations as much as we can.” The Beepol bumblebee ‘lodges’ were
installed last year for the first time and were a great success with
bees buzzing happily in the borders.</div>

<h4>
<img alt="Bumblebee approaching wax moth guard" height="149" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Bumblebee_approaching_wax_moth_guard.jpg" style="float: right;" width="204" />What's new this year, is a wax-moth-guard which attaches to each of the Beepol Lodges...</h4>
The nests and hives of a number of different bee species, including
bumblebees, are sometimes invaded by wax moths. Wax moths lay their eggs
within or close to the bee nests and the larvae hatch then disperse
into the nest feeding on the contents. If nests are invaded during the
early stage, then the wax moth infestation is often fatal.<br />
<br />
Amazingly, the bumblebees soon learn how to push open the guard to
leave and return to the nest. Wax moths however, are neither strong
enough or clever enough to do this! It's a great chemical-free solution.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Bumblebee-friendly flowers in the Walled Garden" height="153" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Bumblebee_friendly_flowers_in_the_fruit_garden.jpg" style="float: right;" width="204" />You can find out more about the Beepol Lodges, and wax-moth-guards on the Beepol <a href="http://www.dragonfli.co.uk/bumblebees/anti-wax-moth-kit" target="_blank">website</a>, and Beepol Lodges will shortly be available to purchase from our Bookshop and Plant Stall in Terrace Cottage here at Harewood.<br />
<br />
Gardens have become such important places for bees – here at Harewood
the Gardens Team also make a point of growing bee-friendly plants such
as salvias, catmint, raspberries, lavender, green manures such as
phacelia, and other flowering shrubs.<br />

intrigued by a recent discovery made during current refurbishment work on the
offices at Harewood House.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #333333;">We’re not talking about a piece of unknown Chippendale or a
Turner watercolour, but a brief insight into the lives of two workmen who were
working at Harewood on 14th April 1912 - an anniversary that’s been much
talked about recently following the centenary anniversary of the sinking of the
Titanic.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #333333;"></span></span>Found behind a panel on a doorway, E Sunderland and E Wilton wrote:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: inherit;">

<div id="mainContent">
<a href="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Titanic_discovery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Titanic Discovery" border="0" height="195" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Titanic_discovery.jpg" width="204" /></a><i><strong>Titantic Disaster<br /> Sunday April 14th 1912<br /> 1503 persons drowned<br /> 705 persons saved<br /> Commander Capt: Smith<br /> This disaster happened near [illegible]. </strong></i><br />
<i><strong>The boat was the largest afloat and on her maiden voyage.<br /> E Sunderland<br /> E Wilton<br /> Painters</strong></i><br />
<br />
Robert Kay, Harewood’s chief decorator, who himself has worked at
Harewood for 37 years, knew of Edgar Sunderland from his predecessor who
remembered the man. ‘He was well known for leaving time capsules and
notes around the House. We recently found photographs and newspaper
cuttings behind a wall in the State Gallery from 1886. It’s a wonderful
way to enjoy and find out more about the legacy of people working at
Harewood and we never know what we might find next. I started work on
the door panel on 14th May and it was eerie finding this exactly 100
years and one month from the date of the sinking, particularly as this
year sees the centenary.’<br />
<br />
Henry, 6th Earl of Harewood would have been in his early twenties on
this date and the rooms continued to be used by the Lascelles’ family
through the childhood’s of the 7th Earl of Harewood, who died in July
last year, and his son David Lascelles, the 8th Earl of Harewood and
his brothers.<br />
<br />
In the early 1980s , Harewood revealed its most extraordinary find,
handpainted Chinese wallpaper which had originally hung in the Chintz
Bedroom in 1769 by Chippendale’s men. But as fashions changed, it was
removed, stored and forgotten for almost 2 centuries. This fabulous
wallpaper was conserved and re-hung in the newly refurbished East
Bedroom for visitors to enjoy in 2008.<br />
<br />
Harewood continues to evolve, both as a visitor destination and a
major player in Yorkshire’s heritage. The University of York is
currently engaged in an archaeological dig on the site of Gawthorpe,
which was the predecessor to Harewood House. The dig will form a major
element of Harewood’s major forthcoming Medieval Faire at the end of
June and the 5 year celebration of Medieval at Harewood. This is the
second summer students from the University of York have been working in
the grounds and finds continue to astound.<br />
<br />
Harewood continues to provide clues to its history, some that we
search for and some that we come upon by chance. Harewood and its
people might change across the centuries, but if anything is a constant
here, it is change and Harewood looks forward to embracing finds in
the future .... now where did Robert put that Jubilee time capsule?<br />

Harewood was home to HRH Princess Mary, The Princess Royal, through
four decades. Her love of Yorkshire and the affection the people of
Yorkshire felt for her in return mean that she will always be remembered
as ‘The Yorkshire Princess’.<br />
Princess Mary married Henry, 6th Earl of Harewood in 1922
and they moved into Harewood House in 1929. They were avid collectors
and, with the generous help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, we will be
displaying for the first time many of the things that were precious to
her: personal items such as exquisite fans, gifts from heads of state,
presents from her royal relations by the great designer Fabergé. These
displays provide a glimpse into the life and loves of a very ‘Yorkshire
Princess’.<br />

In the Terrace Gallery<b> </b>a special collection of
photographs taken by favourite royal photographer Marcus Adams, and
generously lent by The Queen from The Royal Collection, capture with
wonderful charm the young Princess Elizabeth, life as the new royal
family, the pre-war years and then later a new generation of royals;
Prince Charles and Princess Anne. Don’t miss the opportunity to see
these striking, fun, informal and vibrant photographs.<br />

Visit the House this season and round your visit off with a delicious

<h1>
Student archaeologists on trail of Yorkshire gem's hidden past</h1>
<img alt="Gawthorpe Dig with York University Archaeology Department - gawthorpe old drawing" height="168" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/gawthorpe014compressed_web.jpg" style="float: right;" width="205" />Archaeologists
from the University of York are revealing intriguing traces -- hidden
for more than two centuries -- of the forerunner of one of Yorkshire’s
great country houses.<br />
<br />
In the shadow of Harewood House, a team of undergraduate students is
carrying out the painstaking task of unearthing the remnants of
Harewood’s predecessor, Gawthorpe Hall, which was demolished in 1773.<br />
<br />
After carrying out exploratory digs and geophysical surveys over the
last two years, the student archaeologists are spending three weeks
uncovering the layout of the Hall of which only two contemporary
illustrations survive.<br />
<br />
Education sessions will allow school groups to explore the
excavation, get their hands dirty digging and talk to the
archaeologists. Workshops, lectures and public tours of the dig as well
as exhibits of finds will be a feature of <a href="http://www.harewood.org/whats-on/events/1/665" target="_blank">Harewood’s Medieval Festival</a> on 16th and 17th July. You’ll also find out more about <a href="http://www.harewood.org/grounds/the-grounds/allsaintschurch-harewood" target="_blank">Harewood All Saints’ Church</a> (founded in 1116), the 12th century <a href="http://www.harewood.org/conservation-estate/conservation-projects/harewood-castle" target="_blank">Castle</a> and medieval village of ‘Harwood’ [then spelt without an ‘e’]. Visit our <a href="http://www.harewood.org/whats-on/events/1/665" target="_blank">Medieval Festival</a> event webpage for details.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Gawthorpe Dig 2011 - finds" height="153" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/IMG_2876_4.jpg" style="float: right;" width="204" />The
archaeologists have already discovered a wealth of artefacts including a
coin dating from the early 15th century, an 18th century chamber pot,
decorative glassware and wine bottle fragments, decorative pins and a
thimble as well as a range of ceramics from the medieval period up to
the 18th century, which will help us to tell the story of how the family
lived, how the hall was decorated and much more besides. The students
have also unearthed a flint arrowhead dating back to pre-history.<br />
<br />
<b>Dr Finch said:</b> "As well as providing a much longer
history of Harewood that stretches thousands of years back into
prehistory, the archaeology will give us a unique insight into the
impact the Caribbean sugar industry and slavery had, not just on the
fortunes of the Lascelles family, but on English landscape and society
as a whole over two hundred years ago."<br />
<br />
<img alt="Gawthorpe Dig 2011" height="154" src="http://www.harewood.org/_imagebank/Dig_10_May_2011_006.jpg" style="float: right;" width="205" /><b>David Lascelles said:</b>
“So much of what we know of Harewood’s history focuses on Harewood
House and who has lived there. The excavation being done by York
University students is helping to fill some of the gaps of that earlier
history and – we all hope – answer some of the questions about
Gawthorpe. We’ll be re-creating medieval Harewood in a digital “fly-by”
to be shown as part of our Medieval Festival event in July, revealing a
landscape without Harewood House and before Capability Brown’s
intervention.”<br />
<br />
Dr Finch headed a team from the University of York which travelled to
Barbados last month to investigate the old Lascelles plantations, some
of which still operate as sugar plantations with historic houses and
factory buildings still surviving. Artefacts discovered there will be
added to those found at Gawthorpe to create a new teaching resource
based in Barbados and Yorkshire.<br />
<br />

Harewood Learning team have this Monday begun work on the Harewood Learning
Garden, and have learnt first hand the hard work of gardening!</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Our aims
of the first gardening session were to clear the corner of the garden ready for
our pond area to be built, and begin work on our habitat pile. The corner
of the garden in the picture below is going to be where we dig our pond, so the
first job of the day was to clear everything from this corner, before any
digging could begin. After raking leaves up from the area to become our
pond, we soon came up against a large barrier in the form of a very troublesome
shrub called a <i>Philadelphus. </i>With very deep roots, this shrub was
well and truly rooted in the ground, and consequently delayed our preparation
of the pond area, as we were unable to remove it!</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"></span></div>
